We live in an ever-increasing toxic environment. This fact is difficult to deny. Many of the toxins abundant in the environment today did not exist 30 years ago, including certain pesticides, herbicides, and industrial chemicals that can enter our bodies through the food, water, and air supplies. These toxins can become trapped in our body’s organs and tissues, which over time can negatively impact health, reduce vitality and eventually may contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

7 Day Challenge
1. Drink half your body weight in water
2. Ditch the sugar drinks…only water (you can add any fresh fruit to your water)
3. Cut out white flour
4. Cut out any artificial sweeteners…get some stevia, organic coconut sugar or sugar in the raw for your coffee
5. Cut out anything that comes in a box or a bag
6. Stick to the out skirts of your supermarket…that’s where all the live foods live…
7. Focus on Simple Clean and Whole Foods…produce, lean meats, veggies, fruits and good grains
8. Exercise 3-5 days a week

We gathered around the studio at The Bar Method for our third of four meetings associated with The 30 Day Challenge. The room was a buzz with excitement as Jen & Angie (co-owners of The Bar Method, Summit) began their talk. I must admit it was pretty cool to hear them in this surrounding talk personally about the program, share their insights, and answer individual concerns and questions. I thought for a second, did I bid on this at some school auction?
Jen Meister (Simple, Clean & Whole) then spoke giving us our now expected new shopping list and reminded us that there will be no class next week. Our final meeting will be the following week. A few women looked around puzzled like me who also failed to make note of this in their calendars. As Jen explained that we would soon be on our own in this journey, fear began to take hold of me. I was not alone. Sensing the mood change, Jen went on to explain how she, Jen and Angie are like our “tour guides” for nutrition and exercise. “When you go on a trip to Europe and take a tour, you enjoy it but the tour guide doesn’t come back to your hotel with you. You don’t stay in your room all night, you go out and live”. As I stared anxiously at “my new food sensai”, ”my nutritional Yoda”, “my Oprah” of the last three weeks I caught my reflection in the mirror across from where I was sitting – it occurred to me that this is the same expression I’ve seen in my children. That look of fear like when we recently made our 14 yr. old son figure out how to find the remainder of his community service hours on his own for the 8th Grade trip to Washington. It was the look my daughter gave me when she feared I’d let go of the back of the bike 2 summer ago. My own words were ringing in my ears about how I want to give my kids the tools to make them capable in life. How we can’t spoon feed them and they have to do things themselves. Yet here I sit as scared as a kid not wanting to let go of their parent’s hand. How would I be able to get through day 31 without the support system of this program?
The panic subsided a bit as the focus shifted to talking about “Primary Foods”. I’ve spent the last three weeks changing up my Primary Foods. They have included vegetables, protein, grains, meats, fruits, and water, water, water. My plate looks very different now. I feel much better creating this new healthy base in my diet. Now, the homework is getting harder and we’re starting to focusing on the real “Primary Foods”, this is the stuff I base my life on. Relationships, Career/Motherhood, Spirituality, Physical Activity, etc. These primary foods need nourishment too. My Physical Activity, a previous concern, has already changed in three weeks by doing the Bar Method consistently. I’ve added in walking to and from class as well. It’s a lot to take in, examining what primary foods to have on your plate of life, especially in a 30 day period. I have to keep it in perspective and remember that these 30 days are a training program to prepare myself to shift my mind-set for life.
I was in the supermarket yesterday when a “friend” stopped me and asked if I’d consider volunteering for something I don’t really want to do. She’s hard to turn down, just like cheese & crackers, baked goods and a fountain coke for me. I thought to myself as I walked away “I’ve got to get rid of that french-fry and replace her with a nice yellow pepper” and I chuckled all the way home. Maybe there’s hope for me yet…
What I Learned this Week:
- I’ve learned…that veggie burgers aren’t bad.
- I’ve learned…that strengthening and shaping my muscles will make me less clumsy and less prone to falling as I age – something to look forward to.
- I’ve learned…that The Bar Method has an App in the iTunes Store that lets me check and schedule classes on the fly.
- I’ve learned…that reconnecting with old friends I’ve lost touch with is very nourishing.
As the Spring turns into Summer, it is a great idea to start your day with a delicious Protein Shake…..

1⁄2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
1⁄2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1⁄2 cup unsweetened rice or almond milk pinch of cinnamon
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk

1⁄4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut or stevia (optional)
Cherry Zinger Shake
1⁄2 cup frozen blackberries
1⁄2 cup frozen cherries
1⁄2 cup unsweetened rice milk
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
