Put Down that Soda Because It’s Killing You

Do you know how much damage a single glass or can of soda does to you physically and emotionally? Call it pop, soda, Coke, diet, less sugar, fake sugar – the simple truth is that it kills!

I don’t know what it is with that fizzy soda filled with sugar! I’m not sure if it’s summer that brings on the craving for a cold soda, but for some reason, I’ve been working with several new clients who have soda addictions. My most recent conversations with each of them made me feel the need to share some information with you today. Let’s call it the truth about soda.

Death by Soda

One can of soda has 39 grams of sugar and 39 grams of carbs! Why do we ever put such a “thing” in our bodies? I’ll tell you why. We drink soda because it’s one of those fine manufactured products that cause addiction. Just one soda can trigger a whole host of sugar cravings not to mention an hour later wanting some salt as well!

Once you have that craving and drink a soda, your blood sugar levels spike. Guess what happens next? You feel even hungrier and the craving gets even stronger! As a result, your blood sugar levels crash an hour later, which causes you to crave even more sugar.

Do you see the pattern? It’s a vicious cycle! The more you practice sugar, the more fat you’ll store and the more your body will crave that “sugar high.” There is just no way around it.

Soda impacts so many functions in your body, and the effects aren’t always immediately recognizable. In other words, soda does horrible things to your mind and body in the short-term and long-term. Repeated use makes things so much worse!

Before you say, “I can’t quit soda,” or “I don’t want to stop drinking soda,” consider these facts about how soda affects your body:

  • Sugar-laden drinks like soda and sports drinks contain well over 150 calories in a single serving.
  • Soda is the number one source of sugar in the U.S. diet, followed by sweetened fruit drinks.
  • Drinking a single soda each day equates to consuming 39 pounds of sugar per year. That’s 39 pounds of empty calories with no, zilch, zero nutritional value.
  • Sugar-sweetened drinks are linked to more than 180,000 obesity-related deaths per year.
  • Soda consumption has been linked to osteoporosis and bone density loss.
  • Regular soda consumption leads to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Drinking soda increases your chances of developing asthma or COPD.
  • The acids in soda corrode your teeth. In fact, the level of corrosion has been compared to drinking battery acid.

Still want to drink that glass of soda?

But wait! There’s more!

Soda directly affects multiple processes in your body. For example, sugary sodas have been linked to neurological, renal, digestive, skeletal, cardiac, respiratory, and genetic problems.

And don’t think drinking diet sodas makes it okay to ingest these killers. For example, soda has been linked to kidney stones and other renal problems, but diet cola doubles the risk. Diet soda can be just as bad or worse than regular soda!

How to Quit Soda Once and for All

Quitting soda begins by recognizing how much damage it’s doing to you physically, which directly impacts your emotional well-being. Pay close attention to the empty calories in what you drink. Water is calorie and sugar free, and it has the added benefits of flushing out unwanted toxic build up. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day and get rid of the soda!
